Summary: Rodney finds a four-leaf clover. Ronon and Teyla's reactions are...unexpected.
A/Ns: fills the "four-leaf clover" square on my cottoncandy bingo card. Thankalot to [livejournal.com profile] ginny305 who is the best friend one can imagine <3. Over here, four-leaf clover is supposed to bring luck and therefore, it's on sale in a lot of places for the New Year's Eve.

"Oh, hey, look." John stopped when Rodney did, a frown on his face.

"What is it, McKay?" he asked, a hint of long-suffering patience running out in his voice. He doubted Rodney noticed it, but John hadn't stopped hoping yet.

"Look," Rodney repeated, something like giddiness filling his own voice. He was completely oblivious to the look on John's face, Teyla's frown and the way Ronon's hands twitched toward his hip. "It's a four-leaf clover!"

He bent down his fingers reaching out toward the patch of green right next to the path, his tablet pc forgotten for the moment.

It was a miracle, John thought idly, that Rodney had looked up from his tablet in the first place. He didn't know how Rodney did it, but the man had perfected the skill of walking or even running across uneven wooded terrain without lifting his eyes from his computer once, and he rarely fell.

"It's been a while since I saw one of th-ow!" Rodney's words were interrupted by an indignified squawk when Ronon landed half on top of him, disturbing his balance and making both of them topple onto the ground. Ronon's bigger body covered Rodney almost completely, and for a long moment, the only thing visible of him were his wildly flailing hands and feet.

"Get off of me, you big caveman!" Rodney yelped breathlessly, and Ronon quickly rolled to the side and sat up, his fingers wrapped tightly around Rodney's wrist and stopping him from touching the little harmless plant.

"Care to explain what that was?" John drawled, trying hard to appear amused and not like a man whose adrenaline level had just jumped up.

"I believe you can let go of Rodney now, Ronon," Teyla added, but she was looking around carefully, and she had crouched down slightly, as if she expected an attack at any moment.

John carefully followed her example and looked around. They were still surrounded by trees, the sun was shining and birds were chirping. It was as peaceful as it could get, and there was no sign of danger - no whining of a Wraith dart, no whistling of old-fashioned weapons being thrown after them, no screaming natives.

Everything around them was quiet.

"Ronon?" John asked as he crouched down next to them. He couldn't feel any danger, but that didn't mean there wasn't any, and if his teammates' spidey senses were tingling, he had, long ago, learned to trust them about things like that.

They probably gave a funny picture, John thought after a long moment in which they stayed huddled together on the ground where they offered a smaller target, and nothing happened.

Finally, Rodney shifted again. He, too, had trusted Ronon and Teyla's instincts and had stayed down and quiet.

"Really," he said. "What? Were you trying to kill me, or what?"

His voice was doing that thing where it sounded all nervous and worried and insecure, and Ronon's fingers closed around his wrist one more time, but this time in an obvious caress.

"Sorry," he apologized gruffly. "It's...it's stupid."

"What is?" Rodney demanded and slowly climbed back to his feet.

"Old superstitions," Teyla explained and helped wipe dry leaves and dirt off of Rodney's jacket. "You are not supposed to touch a four-leaf clover. It brings bad luck to you and your loved ones."

Rodney and John exchanged an amused look. "Bad luck, huh?" John asked finally and bent down, to retrieve Rodney's tablet.

"Yes." Ronon glared darkly at the innocent little plant, as if he was planning on destroying it. "For you and your loved ones."

"Well," John pointed out, speaking slowly and thinking fast. "Not here, it's not. It's supposed to bring you luck, here on Earth. So, why don't we leave the poor little plant where it is and get back to the cabin? I think pizza and hot chocolate sounds better than an intergalactical incident because of a plant, don't you?"

Ronon gave him a doubtful look, but Teyla inclined her head slightly and pushed her hand into Rodney's.

"Yes," she agreed. "Let us go back."

They instinctively and quietly fell back into their off-world patterns, even if this was Earth and relatively safe, Teyla taking point and John guarding their six despite the fact that none of them were armed, as they made their way back to the cabin they'd rented.

They were almost there when Rodney suddenly chuckled. "It's a good thing we are here now," he explained when he noticed the questioning looks from his teammates, breaking the silence that had allen between them. "And not during New Year's Eve, when there's four-leaf clovers everywhere!"
