"Good morning, sunshine!"
The words and a tickling sensation on her calf woke her up far too early, with the sun just coming up over the building across the street, barely visible from the half-closed window. Stella stretched and rolled around in an attempt to turn away from the tickling and go back to sleep. It was far too early, she was sure of that, even without having opened her eyes more than a slit and without looking at the alarm clock.
"Good morning, dear," another voice purred in her ear, followed by a lick over the shell. "Open those gorgeous eyes for a moment, okay?"
She frowned and batted at the hand that had wormed its way under the warm covers and ran over her stomach and the arch of her ribs now.
"Stella. Only five minutes, okay?"
It was that third voice that made her shake off the sleep and blink her eyes open.
She sat up and looked around her bedroom in confusion. "How did you guys get in here?" she muttered and stifled a yawn.
"Mac did it," Danny quickly answered and bounced on the edge of the mattress, where he'd sat down. "You awake now?"
"Yes," she smiled and tangled her hand in his short hair, pulling him close for a soft kiss. "That answer enough?"
"I want too," Don announced and placed his hand on her shoulder, pulling her to the other side. She went willingly, without releasing her grip on Danny's hair, and when Don's palm slid over her cheek and he kissed her deeply, all she could hear over the rush of blood in her ears was his rapid breathing. She wasn't surprised when, as soon as she pulled back from Don's lip with a teasing nip to his tongue, Danny leaned in and claimed Don's mouth with his own.
She smoothed her hand over his head and around the collar of the t-shirt he was wearing while grinning over their heads at the third man in her bedroom. Mac had watched the whole thing from the foot of her bed with a small smile, and now he raised an eyebrow.
Stella shrugged slightly and tugged gently on Don's shoulder. As much as she loved watching them, she now really wanted to know why they had woken her up this early.
Don and Danny slowly seperated, and Mac coughed slightly.
"I think you have...questions," he began stiffly, and Stella nodded and moved to cross her arms across her chest.
"And I promise we..."
"Mac," Danny interrupted and rolled his eyes, while Don smiled slightly. It was obvious that they had planned what was coming next, maybe even rehearsed it, and the thought made her smile and entwine her fingers with Don's. It wasn't that he was shy, but she had noticed that he tended to fade in the background when the four of them were together, quietly doing his job, or what he wanted to do if they were off the clock, without drawing too much attention to himself unless he wanted to be noticed.
"Danny. We talked about this," Mac pointed out calmly. "And we came to the decision that..."
"...you're doing it wrong. Sorry, Mac." Danny shrugged and stared defiantly at the older man. "This is not..."
"Guys," Stella interrupted with a small laugh. "What is it that we are talking about right now?"
"Breakfast," Don explained with a quick look at both Danny and Mac. "Since it's your day off and we have to work all day long...we thought we'd get you at least a special start into this special day."
Stella stared at him for a second, before she realized what he was talking about. She blushed slightly, but Don just brushed his thumb over her cheek again and smiled at her. "Happy birthday, Stel."
"Happy birthday," Danny echoed and leaned over to hug her and press a kiss to her cheek, directly next to where Don's thumb was still resting. "Hope it's a good one."
"Thanks," she grinned. "Thank you."
A soft cough from Mac had her looking up. He had stepped up to Danny and now sat down next to the younger man. "Happy birthday, Stella," he said quietly and leaned awkwardly over to give her a quick peck on the cheek.
"Give the lady a proper kiss," Danny ordered quietly and slipped his arm around Mac's waist to keep him close, while his free hand ghosted over Stella's lap until he found her hand and took it. Only a heartbeat later, he could feel the callouses of Don's fingers covering his hand, and a quick look confirmed that Don had wrapped his free arm around Stella.
Danny hummed softly while he watched Stella and Mac kiss. "Breakfast," he then said.
Mac slowly pulled back from the kiss and shifted slightly. "Yeah. And since we were pretty sure that we wouldn't want to take you out right now..." He bent down to pick up something from the floor next to her bed and presented it to her.
Stella stared at the object for a moment in disbelief, then she started laughing.
"You don't like it?" Danny asked, slightly disappointed. Stella bit her lip slightly and took a second, closer look at the object in Mac's hands.
It was a cake. A birthday cake, shaped like a pair of handcuffs. Candles were scattered around the plate, and for a second she wondered how she could have missed the glow of them.
"I love it," she told them sincerely. "It's the best birthday breakfast I've ever had."
"It only gets better," Danny promised and held up the thermos of coffee and the cups.
"And since this is your birthday, and you have the day off and we don't..." Don grinned and put an envelope and a small box on the nightstand, where she could see it perfectly well. "We have to have breakfast early and let you go back to sleep afterwards. And when you wake up again, you can open your present."
Stella laughed and took the fork Don handed her. "Sounds like a plan," she smiled. “Thank you. All of you.”
“You’re welcome,” Mac smiled and squeezed her leg again, tickling her slightly as he did. Stella smiled at the memory of what had woken her up.
“Happy birthday,” Don added as she prepared to blow out the candles.
It sounded like a perfect plan for her birthday.
It only could be better if they all had the day off, she thought, but then, it would be almost impossible to get almost the whole team off for the day, and too many crimes would stay unsolved, too many criminals would escape.
However, it was something she could wish for while blowing out her candles...
The End.
