Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived a brave, wise and strong king.

His name was Jack.

King Jack ruled over a big kingdom, guided by his friend Daniel, the royal wizard, and the royal guard under the brave Princess Samantha and Lord Teal’C.

As the king travelled through his kingdom one day, he was attacked by a group of small, glowing gnomes that were intent on harming him. King Jack, who had been separated from his royal guard, fought long and hard, but there were too many gnomes and the king started to tire after a while.

The gnomes came closer and closer, but before they could raise their weapons and harm the king, a giant, black horse came in between them and the king. Atop the horse was a strong knight, his sword raised high above his head…

“Turn that off,” John ordered sharply. The tips of his ears had turned and embarrassed shade of pink, and his hand was clenching reflexively around the hilt of his sword.

“What, why?” Rodney protested, but one look from John, who probably looked more dangerous in his black armor than he really was, made him shut up and smack the little apparatus he’d invented and shown to the group of people in this hall, to make it fall quiet.

Silence fell over the hall.

“So,” Rodney said after a moment and rubbed his hand together briskly. “Any clues as to what the king wants from you, oh Great Savior Of His Majesty?”

John lifted a shoulder for an indifferent shrug, which was quite a feat considering he wore a heavy suit of armor.

“No,” he admitted, “but I guess we’re about to find out.” He nodded toward the winged doors at the end of the hall, where Princess Samantha and the royal wizard Daniel were standing and looking around searchingly.

John watched with some amusement as Rodney turned scarlet. He’d known the other man – an alchemist, not a wizard, magic and hocus pocus, please, he was a scientist – for only a short amount of time, and yet, he was sure that it wasn’t the wizard who was causing his blush.

“She’ll probably kick your ass,” he informed Rodney, “while asleep,” before standing and stepping up to Princess Samantha. Behind him, he could hear the squeak of Rodney’s protest, and it made the corners of his mouth twitch with faint amusement.

He really couldn’t have spent the past few hours, while he was waiting for his audience with King Jack, in better, or more amusing, company.

“My Lord.”

John bowed his head respectfully. He would have kneeled, but he knew it would take him almost half an hour to get back up because of his armor and therefore he remained standing. Respectfully, of course.

“Sheppard.” King Jack was sprawled in his throne, his cheek resting on the palm of his right hand. The crown sat at a daunting angle on his head. In contrast, Lord Teal’C was standing ramrod-straight next to the throne. “How nice that you could join us today.”

“At your service, my Lord,” John managed to press out from between clenched teeth. There were reasons why he preferred staying far away from the royal court. After he’d once hit a Lord, he’d been exiled, but after he’d accidentally saved King Jack’s life, he had been redeemed, at least officially.

King Jack narrowed his eyes slightly. Slowly, he straightened in his seat, clasped his hands between his knees and asked, “How would you like to go on a quest, Sheppard?”

John shrugged slightly. His armor rattled and squeaked. “What kind of quest?” he asked carefully.

Jack grinned triumphantly. “A dangerous and important quest. One I’d only trust to my most faithful servants…but I need T and Sam here.” He held up a finger. “And no, Daniel, you can’t go.”

From behind him, John heard the wizard huff in annoyance, but he didn’t turn around.

“What is the quest, my Lord?” he simply asked.

“Find Sleeping Beauty and wake her,” the king ordered.

Surprised, John took a small step back.

“That’s it?” he asked, doubt filling his voice.

“Yeah, pretty much.” Jack shrugged. “You don’t have to go on your own, you can take someone with you.”

“Okay.” John grinned. “I choose Rodney.”

Jack looked at him and raised his eyebrows. “So – you do it?”

John nodded, even if he had no idea where to start looking for this Sleeping Beauty.

“And you’re sure about the alchemist, Rodney?”

John nodded again.

Jack clapped his hands. “Great,” he said enthusiastically. “That’s settled, then.”

Taking Rodney, it turned out, had been the right decision. The alchemist had turned out to be smart and very brave, and over the course of their quest, the two of them became good friends. They were soon joined by the Warrior princess Teyla and a good knight named Ronon, and together, the four of them traveled across the entire kingdom and beyond its borders on their search of Sleeping Beauty, to wake her up.

However, none of them had expected Sleeping Beauty to be a castle. But as soon as it woke around them as they stepped into its great and wondrous halls, they knew that they had found what they had been looking for so long.

And if they haven’t died yet, they still live in the castle and have many adventures together and lived happily ever after.
