“Come on, let me see,” Hawkes coaxed and pulled Don’s hand away from his face. His grip was gentle, but sure, and still Don flinched when his fingertips brushed against tender skin. He pulled away and blinked to clear his vision – it didn’t work. It had been quite an attack…..
“That’s gonna be a nasty bruise,” Danny observed and patted Don’s shoulder briefly. “Let’s get you an icepack.”
“Thanks, Messer,” he managed and somehow got up to his feet. “How did I deserve this?”
Danny wrapped a steadying arm around him and grinned. “That’s what friends are for, after all.”

Danny grinned in triumph and bounced the ball on the pavement. “Didn’t see that, huh?” he taunted, and Flack laughed at his childish joy – Danny looked younger without his glasses, dressed in sweats and a t-shirt.
“Let’s see if you can do that again,” he grinned, and Danny laughed as well.
It was strange, Don thought while they continued their little game, Danny Messer was his best friend. They could have been enemies, with their respective backgrounds as the son of a cop and the son of a criminal.
They could have been enemies.
Don was glad that they weren’t.

“Sweetheart?” he sputtered and pushed his plate over to her.
“Remind me why I’m doing this?” He carefully looked around the restaurant.
Aiden patted his leg comfortingly and smiled softly. “To catch this killer…..and then, you can go home. I bet your lovers already wait for you.”
Don sighed again. He just hoped that Mac and Danny never found out about the details of this “date”...

He, too, didn’t know what to do in this situation.
“We can’t do anything?” he asked, and Stella shook her head. “We can be here for him. And we will.”
They all nodded. Of course they would.

They met at a bar, somewhere in New York, where nobody knew that Don was a cop. He enjoyed the anonymity. He enjoyed the fact that he could greet his lover with a wide, happy grin instead of a short and professional nod. And he certainly enjoyed the brief, but love-filled kiss he got in response to his smile.
Yes, he thought when a hand comfortably settled on his thigh and his lover leaned up against his side. Sometimes it was good when nobody knew him, when he was surrounded by strangers.
As long as his lover was with him…
