Title: Right Until The End
Author: Kathie
Fandom: CSI:Miami
Rating: FRT-13
Disclaimer: No offense meant to the CSI:Miami characters, but if they were mine, I would try to exchange them for CSINY characters…
Warnings: none yet.
Summary: Something is wrong with Tim Speedle, but he doesn’t know what.
Authors Notes: Ginny is to be blamed for this one. She dared me to post it. And Dee too. They made me do it. I love them.
Title stolen from a line from Queen, because I’m lazy like that. First in the Manticor-series.
***
Timothy Speedle rarely got ill.
And even when he wasn’t feeling perfectly well, he still tried not to miss any work days. It was not because he wanted to follow his boss’ glowing example, even if that seemed to be the case.
Horatio Caine never even got something as mundane as a cold.
Whenever Speed felt under the weather, he tried to cure it with hot tea or a hot shower. If push came to shove, he let Alexx take care of him for a few days. But, he reflected weakly while throwing up for the fifth time within an hour, he couldn’t remember ever feeling so miserable.
He rested his head on the edge of the toilet and tried to calm the shaking that had settled in his bones. The shaking had started a few days ago and had gotten worse, up to the point where Eric had asked him if he got himself addicted to something. It hadn’t been funny, he thought darkly, and he only had growled at his friend. Making jokes about addictions while Horatio was in the same room, after losing his brother to drugs, was probably not a good idea. Horatio knew everything that was said in the lab, and he would find out.
Speed had already experienced how it felt to have Horatio disappointed in him, and he wasn’t too keen to repeat it.
He sighed, rinsed his mouth and stood on shaky legs. He had kneeled too long, he told himself, and that was the only reason for him feeling so dizzy.
Slowly, he picked his way back to the couch. He closed his eyes tiredly as he sank down in the nest of blankets and pillows he’d built. Maybe he had finally caught the flu everybody else had been complaining about for weeks. Maybe he simply was so tired that his whole body revolted.
He doubled over when his stomach clenched in painful cramps, and he finally accepted the fact that he should probably call someone.
Afterwards, he didn’t know why he had dialled Horatio’s number, of all people, and not Alexx’. He was sure he could come up with a million different reasons, all valid and good, but the truth was that he trusted Horatio to fix things, simple as that.
It took Horatio an eternity to finally answer his phone, he thought darkly. It felt like an eternity, even if it probably was not more than just a few moments.
“Horatio.”
Speed needed a moment to just concentrate on his breathing when he finally heard the familiar voice. He could easily picture Horatio, head slightly tilted, with a frown etched into his forehead, as he asked, “Hello?”
“H…it’s me,” he mumbled quickly, before Horatio could hang up on him. “Sorry for the late call…” He had to stop to take a breath. His stomach reacted by cramping even more.
“Speed? What’s wrong?” Horatio’s voice sounded genuinely concerned, and Speed allowed a small sob to escape him before clenching his teeth.
“Don’t know,” he managed to hiss. He didn’t know what was wrong. He didn’t even remember why he had called Horatio. What had he been thinking? Mentally he chastised himself. Horatio had been working as hard as he had, maybe even harder, and here he was, bothering him with his stomach flu.
On second thought, he really doubted that he was suffering from the flu.
“Speed?”
If possible, Horatio’s voice sounded even more concerned, but Speed wasn’t able to answer anymore. Another cramp had forced him to double over and wrap both arms around himself. He didn’t care that he’d dropped the phone. His whole world narrowed and focused on the intense pain he was feeling.
The last thing he remembered was Horatio’s voice, thin over the phone, with a rarely heard urgency, calling out his name, then everything went black.
The End…
