The man had refused to sit down at first, but Tony expected him to give in eventually, if they kept him in the interrogation room for longer. They all did, in his experience. Some of them might take hours and days, but in the end, they would give in.
Especially when faced with Jethro Gibbs.
He couldn’t help the small smile at the thought of his boss. No matter how stubborn this one was, Gibbs was more stubborn. And – he checked the case file he was holding again – Captain Maximilian Isaac Mus, the man’s name was, wouldn’t stand a chance to conceal the truth. Gibbs would find out if he’d really murdered someone.
The problem was, of course, that they didn’t know yet if Max had really been the one responsible, or if he’d just been dragged into this case as an innocent bystander. Tony couldn’t tell, and right now, he was waiting on Gibbs to talk to their suspect.
The case had seemed like a simple, open-and-shut murder case. A woman had been kidnapped, tortured and murdered. Witnesses had reported a fight between her and Max just hours before the estimated time of death.
It seemed so easy.
Until they had started their investigation and had found out that their victim had had many enemies. She’d been described by her co-workers as loud and obnoxious, and it seemed like she’d had heated arguments with a few people besides Max. It had grown more confusing from there on, and by now, they were happy about every hint they managed to find.
The door behind him was opened softly and then closed again. Tony didn’t need to turn around to know that it was Gibbs who had joined him. Ziva and McGee were busy following more leads, Abby was working in the lab, Ducky was going over his findings again, to figure out if he’d missed anything, and the director had avoided talking to him since she’s caught him at Gibbs’ house.
Gibbs stepped up to him without saying a single word. His sleeve brushed against Tony’s, but he didn’t allow himself to reach out and touch the younger man. They were at work, and Gibbs had strict rules about that kind of thing.
“That him?” he finally asked.
Tony nodded. “Yes, boss. Max Mus. Found him working out at a local gym.” He grimaced slightly. “He insists that he has nothing to do with the murder. Said she had a lot of enemies.”
Gibbs nodded and continued watching the man in the interrogation room. He was tall; his dark hair was cut short. His shoulders were tense, and Gibbs could tell that they were dealing with a proud, strong man here.
A man of honor.
He didn’t believe for a single moment that Max had killed that woman.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Tony fidget slightly. He knew what his agent was thinking about, and he almost smiled.
“Dinner? Tonight?” he asked and tried not to react to the way Tony’s eyes lit up. It was hard, but he managed. Their relationship was not that old yet that the idea of having a quiet dinner together had become normal.
“Depends,” Tony answered. “Are you cooking?”
Gibbs snorted. “Pizza?”
“Seven?”
“See you then.”
Tony grinned and looked down at the case file in his hands. His attention shifted back to where it belonged – the case – and Gibbs allowed the hint of a smile to escape.
He might order take-out, but he would make the dessert.
After he’d solved this case.
The End.
