Don couldn’t even scream – besides, nobody would hear him here, in this back alley. One second, he’d been fine, and the next, his world disappeared in the red haze of agony when the bat connected with his body. Suddenly he was on the pavement, and every breath he took hurt like hell. He was barely aware of the hands on his throat, strangling him, and that his own strength wasn’t enough to get free. Colors exploded behind his closed lids when he ran out of air, and with sudden clarity he knew that this was it.

This was the end.

When he opened his eyes and was almost blinded by the whiteness of everything around him, he wasn’t very surprised. He blinked the tears away, and suddenly Mac and Danny came into focus.

Mac smiled. Danny leaned over Don with a strange expression on his face.

“I’m gonna kill you for this, Flack,” he murmured.

Don managed a small smile. “You can’t kill me – I’m already dead,” he rasped.

Danny blinked. He looked as if he didn’t know if he wanted to hit or hug Don.

“You’re not dead, you idiot!” he simply said. “You’re just high on pain meds.”
