Title: Daedalus, We Have a Problem
Author: Kathie
Summary: Rodney wants a pet
Warnings: Crossover between SGA and CSI:NY
Prequel to Do You Believe in Wraith...I think this one doesn't make much sense without reading DybiW...
"I want to keep him."
John raised an eyebrow. "You aren't allowed to bring animals to Atlantis, Rodney, you know that," he answered absent-mindedly.
"What?" Rodney stopped fiddling with the laptop and looked at him in confusion. "Oh, no, no, no, Colonel, I wasn't talking about a pet. I was talking about him." He jerked his chin towards the man with the glasses who was busy securing the scene where the Wraith had died.
"You still can't bring pets to Atlantis."
"Oh yeah, Colonel, really funny." Rodney rolled his eyes and folded his arms in front of his chest defensively. "Didn't you catch his name?"
"Sure I did," John replied easily and keyed his radio. "Elizabeth?"
Rodney stared at him as if he expected something, so John rolled his eyes.
"Danny."
"And?"
"Messer."
"Exactly." Rodney looked at him triumphantly.
"Rodney, you can't just take random people to Atlantis just because they've seen a Wraith. And let's not forget about the security..."
"Come on, Colonel, this is New York, they've both probably seen stranger things before breakfast," Rodney interrupted. "Don't you know what that means?"
"No," John said briefly and waved at Ronon and Teyla who had appeared from between the trees. They looked...strange in Earth clothes, he noticed, especially Ronon.
"Nothing," Teyla reported and bowed her head slightly. "It seems that there are no more Wraith on Earth."
"You have a strange planet here, Sheppard," Ronon added thoughtfully and turned around to look at the covered bodies of the Wraith.
"Yeah," John agreed before sighing. "Rodney."
The scientist was practically vibrating next to him.
"Daniel Messer," he now said, "is at the top of his field - chemistry. And we just inconveniently lost our head-" he grimaced briefly "-chemist."
"And?" John asked slowly, not liking where this conversation was headed.
"And so I'm keeping him," Rodney stubbornly said. "We wanted to recruit him when we went to Atlantis the first time, but there were security issues."
"Security issues?" John repeated, disbelief coloring his voice. "Elizabeth, I need Carson!" he said into the radio. "We're standing in the middle of Central Park, for..." He bit his tongue to stop himself from saying something he'd regret later.
"I'm sorry, John," Elizabeth's voice answered calmly. "Let local authorities handle it for now. We will await you at the city morgue and hopefully have our cover story worked out."
"Cover story?" John asked back, "What story?"
He could practically hear the shrug in her voice. "It's New York, John. We hope to exchange the bodies with the help of the Asgard beaming technology and insist that we're dealing with a drugdeal gone bad. At the moment, Hermiod is preparing to exchange the bodies of the Wraith with those of two humans."
"Elizabeth..." John considered his words for a second. He didn't believe that it would work, since both cops had seen the Wraith, had looked them right in the face, but then, he knew enough about Psychology to realize that there was a slim chance that it might.
"...we have another...problem," he said. "Rodney wants to adopt a stray."
"A stray? Do I need to remind you of the 'no animal' rule?"
"We're not talking about an animal, exactly," Rodney interrupted. "It's a chemist!"
"As I said," John smoothly cut in, "Rodney wants to adopt one of the local CSIs."
Rodney keyed his own radio. "Elizabeth, hi."
"Rodney."
"Listen, Elizabeth, I know that there were some issues with his security clearance due to his past...but I assure you we need him."
"Whom are you talking about?" Elizabeth asked cautiously.
"Daniel Messer. Remember him? Brilliant chemist, works for the NYPD, wasting his talent."
Rodney's downturned mouth told John all about what the other man thought about that. "We wanted to recruit him the last time, but there were some problems because of his gang-related past. And because he was under investigation for shooting a cop."
"I assume that those problems didn't just disappear," Elizabeth's voice answered.
Rodney glanced at the two cops that were quietly talking over the body of their dead co-worker. "Elizabeth, we just lost a chemist. And Messer is good. He's better than Kavanaugh."
"Mostly because Kavanaugh is dead," John supplied and glanced worriedly at his watch.
"Yeah, that too." Rodney shook his head slightly. "Kavanaugh always just was second choice. My point is: we need him." He smirked. "And he is a cop. He's a scientist who knows how to shoot a gun."
Ronon nodded briefly towards the two cops. The taller one, the one who had shot the Wraith without flinching, had placed a hand on the smaller one's shoulder.
"He may not want to leave," he noticed.
"What? Of course he will," Rodney said. "Why shouldn't he?"
They all looked at the two cops who were still *touching* each other.
"Oh," Rodney said faintly.
"Yeah, oh," John agreed and shifted. "Let's get rid of the Wraith, and then try to find a solution," he then suggested. "Elizabeth, are you ready to beam the Wraith out now?"
Hermiod's voice answered. "Indeed," he said. "The transfer will take place in 5 seconds."
John allowed himself to take a breath of relief.
At least one problem was solved.
Now he just had to convince Rodney that he could not adopt one Daniel Messer, and then he just had to pay attention that Rodney didn't try to sneak the chemist to Atlantis in a bag or something. If anyone could do it, it was Rodney. John didn't doubt that Rodney would put Messer in a crate to smuggle him to Atlantis.
"Alright, we meet you at the morgue," he agreed. "Sheppard out."
End.
