“Hey, Flack. You busy?”

Don grinned at the familiar sound and shifted to hold his phone between his shoulder and ear. “Actually, on my way to the airport right now. What’s up, Danny?”

“I have a question for you,” Danny said. “Why do you need a gun to sweep floors?”

“I don’t know, Dan, but I’m sure you’ll tell me in a minute,” Don replied, amusement filling his voice. “Sweeping floors is dangerous business?”

Danny laughed before growing serious again. “I thought you might want to know that the rest of your team is safe now. As safe as a bunch of big guys smashing each other into boards can be.” Don heard Danny shuffle a few sheets of paper around. “How is your head?”

“My head? It’s fine. I’m definitely planning on being on the ice tonight. Slow down there. Are you saying that you caught whoever tried to kill Hank? And me?”

“Yeah. Traces of paint on your car brought us to the perp. We still don’t have a motive, but we have at least a partial confession and solid evidence for the case. Like a gun smuggled into the rink. Striations match to the bullet Linds pulled out of the ice at MSG.”

Don laughed. “I thought motive was the job of the detectives,” he grinned. “You CSIs only take care of the how of a crime.”

“Did Hawkes tell you that?” Danny wanted to know. He sounded like he was in a good mood, Don thought, and the news he’d just delivered had the same effect on him. He felt as if a heavy weight just fell off his chest. He had tried not to think about the implications of the case and had refused to acknowledge that it had an effect on him and his game, but it had been undeniable that the simple knowledge of someone wishing harm on him and his teammates had influenced him, and not in a good way.

“You did,” he grinned. “But I think you were drunk that time.” He shifted the phone from one ear to the other. “So, what you’re saying is that we should be safe now?”

Danny made an affirmative sound. “You should,” he said, and it was the best Don had ever heard from the other man.

He smiled. “Thanks, Danny.” Feeling it wasn’t enough to convey what he wanted to say, he added, “For everything. For letting me know.”

“You’re welcome,” Danny replied before sighing. “I have to go back to work,” he said. “More crime scenes.”

“Yeah,” Don said softly. “How about I call you when I’m back and we…you know.”

“Sounds good,” Danny replied, proving that he really knew. “I’ll see you then.”

They hung up, and Don tossed his cell phone back into his bag while laughing out loud.

It was going to be a good day.

Mac raised his eyebrows as he pushed the door to the break room open and peered inside. “Am I missing something?”

“Rangers play,” Danny replied without taking his eyes away from the TV. “They’re interviewing Flack and he says nice things about the NYPD.”

Mac couldn’t hold back his smile as he let his gaze wander over the people that had come together here – Danny with his arms around Lindsay, Adam, Sheldon, Sid, Stella – they were his family, his friends, and he could let it slide that they were watching hockey while on the clock.

Just this once.

Sheldon snorted and leaned his elbows on one of the tables. “He has to say nice things about the NYPD,” he pointed out. “He’s the kid of a cop. If he doesn’t say nice things about us, his mom won’t make his favorite food anymore when he stops by to visit.”

Danny, Adam and Sid laughed, and Sheldon turned his attention back to the TV. Under the blue and white of Don’s jersey he could see just the collar of a grey t-shirt, and Sheldon knew exactly what that shirt looked like and how it felt against his skin. It wasn’t Don’s old shirt with the clover on it, but Sheldon hoped that it would bring Don just as much luck.

“You want to bet?” Adam offered, flinching when he caught Mac’s disapproving glance, but Danny took him up on it and Mac didn’t actually reprimand them, and Sheldon guessed that they could, at least, catch the first period before they would have to return to working.

He smiled softly. He had the best job he could imagine and he had a gorgeous man in his life.

Things couldn’t get any better.

“What do you think, Rangers gonna win?” Danny asked him and nudged him, and Sheldon laughed.

“I hope so.”

The Rangers lost 3-1, but Don had an assist on the lone Rangers' goal and he played a solid game, and it was more than Sheldon had hoped for, for him.

End.
